This Directoire style Walnut table is simply made and the sort of furniture one would have found in a middle class French home such as that of a comfortable merchant, a notary, a priest or farm owner. It is very difficult to date,as it was made for patrons who were not followers of fashion, and so it may have been made anywhere in the first half of the 19th century. The Louis XVI form is simplified to make a charming and useful piece of country furniture. The rognon (French for kidney, not surprisingly!) shaped table top sits on a trestle base.
