Big original oil painting by George Hay

Important antique oil painting "The Mystery" , signed George Hay and presented in giltwood frame. The depiction of a young chamber maid peering into the dark whilst the Lady cowers behind her. Beautifully painted in oil paint on canvas and of large proportions in excellent condition. Signed lower left G Hay but undated. The noted artist George Hay (1831-1912) R.S.A. was a Scottish artist. His narative works were often inspired by Sir Walter Scott. In 1876 he became a full member of the Royal Scottish Academy . He exhibited 132 works at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1856 to 1913.
