Georgian 1780 antique chair with extra-large seat and carved shield back in mahogany.
Mahogany was imported to England at great expense and this gorgeous chair has a secret! Usually, you find chairs that have been "improved" with the later addition of armrests.
This chair has been through the opposite, an armchair that has been made into a chair. Still retaining its original large seat with tapestry upholstery and original patina polished finish.
The large seat is a mark of status to support the more prosperous sitter.
A good strong sturdy antique chair with lots of character.
