| | | 18th Cent. Miniature Prince James Stuart Rare early 18th century miniature portrait on ivory of Prince James Francis Edward Stuart (1688-1765) circle of Jacques-Antoine Arlaud. Prince James the son of James II and Mary of Modena known as "the Old Pretender" and father of Bonnie Prince Charlie, lived in exile in France whilst his protestant sisters Queen Mary and latter Queen Anne ruled England. James is wearing his martial armour with the sash of the Order of the Garter. Pictures of the young Prince were highly valued and an important propaganda tool for the exiled Stuarts and miniatures (because they were portable and easily secreted ) were greatly in demand by English sympathisers.
