Carved Rice God Ifugao Tribe Philippines

This is a superb primitive Rice Gods carving The Bul-ul or Rice Gods is place in the rice granary, in Cordillera these statues keep watch of the rice granaries of Ifugao homes. This rice gods comes from the Ifugao Tribe Mountain Province Batad Village Philippines which was collected in the 70’s The rice Gods or Bul-ul is carved mostly of local hard woods such as Narra, Yakal, and Ipil. Igorot sculptor did not aim at polished perfection of the carving their purpose instead was to emphasise the spiritual quality and power, Bul-ul has a magical presence. Carved by a senior priest the Bul-ul are rubbed with rice cakes and wine smeared with animal blood. This is to implore the rice gods to enter the wooden carvings and charge them with supernatural powers of protecting the rice grains, the rice gods is in excellent original condition with nice patina which can only be acquired all through the years of celebration rituals.
