Almost certainly made in Lyon, this pair of elegant Rococo Louis XV period open armchairs is painted white, all the easier to see by candle light, and the frames are tight and robust. We have recently upholstered them in a yellow 19th century tapestry. Figures decorate the seat back, but not the seat: convention forbade sitting on images of people. The white paint is not original, and there are evidences of wear. There are ancient stories of the travelling craftsman who would come by, once a year, to repaint the chairs in the chateau. Aristocratic comfort, hand msade by master craftsmen.
